Issue: COVID-19 Antibodies Are Sufficient Evidence to Replace Vaccination

Examples of State Bills:  The following bills were introduced in state houses during the 2022 legislative session.

  • MN SF 923 Government vaccine mandates enforcement prohibition; proof of natural antibodies as an alternative to vaccination allowance.

What It Means:  The legislation argues that if you’ve already had Covid-19, you have anti-bodies that are sufficient evidence to replace the need for vaccination or testing.

Key Talking Points:

  • Decisions about vaccination, should be determined by the health care experts not the state legislature.
  • While current evidence suggests that reinfection with Covid-19 is uncommon in the 90 days after the initial infection, we don’t know yet how long protect from Covid-19 lasts, or that sufficient protective antibodies from a prior infection to prevents a person from getting or transmitting the disease.
  • Research states that people should be vaccinated regardless of whether they have already had COVID-19 because full vaccination provides additional protection to those who have had COVID-19.
  • Covid-19 brings additional immunity but is not a substitute for the importance of getting vaccinated.
  • It sets dangerous president, which could deter people from getting their Covid-19 vaccination and could lead to the disintegration of vaccination verification around other recommended vaccines.

Bottom Line:

  • Vaccines not only protect oneself, but families, neighbors, and communities.  They are especially important for children, older adults, for those who are immunocompromised, and those who may not be able to get vaccinated.
  • Covid-19 vaccinations protect individuals from severe illness, hospitalization and death and have helped Americans get back to work and to our daily lives.
  • We should work together to encourage all individuals to receive all recommended vaccines.

We urge Legislators to vote NO on any attempt to use Covid-19 to overturn long standing immunization practices.
