Issue: Limiting Authority for Public Health Measures
Examples of Bill(s):
- MI SB 600. The Revised School Code
- LA HB 428. Prohibits State Board of Education from recommending any vaccine or medical procedure
What it means:
- These bill(s) would limit authority of public officials, specifically by pre-empting the role of public health officials and/or school boards in certifying vaccination requirements for school age children.
Key Talking Points:
- School vaccination requirements are an effective tool in the public health toolbox that have been in place for decades.
- Public Health Departments, along with the Board of Education in partnership with the Department of Health must ensure children have a healthy environment to learn and thrive.
- Legislations like this remove current school entry vaccine requirements which have been around for decades.
- Passage of this legislation could impact future school vaccine requirements, which will lead to increased risk and spread of preventable diseases.
- Without the enforcement of vaccination rules by the Department of Education, this legislation will lead to kids getting sick or possibly dying.
- For example, prior to a chicken pox vaccine, millions of children suffered chicken pox infections, with thousands of cases being so severe that the children were hospitalized.1
Bottom line:
- Vaccination is an effective way to prevent or mitigate disease in an individual and a population.
- Vaccines not only protect oneself, but families, neighbors, and communities. They are especially important for children, older adults, for those who are immunocompromised, and those who may not be able to get vaccinated.
- COVID-19 vaccinations protect individuals from severe illness, hospitalization and death and have helped Americans get back to work and to our daily lives.
- We should work together to encourage all individuals to receive all recommended vaccines.
Vote NO on any attempt to limit authority for public health measures.
